As Foreign Minister Aso stated in a speech (Digital
Hollywood, April 28th, 2006), Japanese pop culture such as manga
and anime have become important keywords in Japan’s cultural diplomacy.
Paying close attention to Japanese culture such as “Manga and anime”
and with the support and acknowledgement of the Foreign Ministry,
TV Aichi has held the “World Cosplay Summit” every year since 2003.
As this is an event that disseminates recognized parts of Japanese
culture, we will endeavor to build and develop the “World Cosplay
Summit”. We gratefully ask for everyone’s continued support.

(12/8/2005 Update)
Japanese manga and anime are becoming explosively popular worldwide.
Lots of anime fans gather in numerous festivals in Asia, North
America
and Europe, and millions of young people have started learning
Japanese just to be able to read manga.
Though we shall not grow conceited by flattering words such as
"Japan is Cool," it is an indisputable fact that manga and
anime have
changed Japan from being the object of mere exoticism or curiosity
into that of genuine yearning interest. Sailormoon, a superheroine
in
a girls' anime, shapes her own future for herself, and in this
sense
differs from Olive, who can be a heroine only by being saved by
Popeye. Sailor Moon now represents independent and self-aware women
also in Europe and America. The contemporary pop-culture of Japan,
beginning with anime and manga, has reversed the direction of cultural
exchange, which was once a one-way flow from Europe and America
to
Japan.
There was a wish that we should organize a super-anime-manga festival
which young people in the world would want to participate in, the
Olympics for anime and manga. "World Cosplay Summit" has
responded to
such an expectation. Winning the championship at the World Cosplay
Summit equals getting an Olympic gold medal or Nobel Prize for
participants from around the world!

of Foreign Affairs, Masaki Okada |

Recently,
just as Japan’s anime and manga has become really happening
and cool, in 2005 at the Aichi Expo Hall the World Cosplay
Summit was held. Cosplay means identifying with and dressing
up as characters from manga and anime. Young people from
many countries who have taken an interest in manga and
anime, the so-called ‘cosplayers’, gathered in its original
place, Japan. Without knowing this situation, it was surprising
to find that Japan was the original place for this. Japan
is looking outwards with this culture, and although it
is seen from abroad as the place of origin, we did not
realize that this was such a large asset.
