This year is the first
time that Singapore is participating.
When thinking about Singapore the “Merlion” isn’t the only thing that
should spring to mind.
Singapore is a city state comprising of 63 small islands plus the
main island of Singapore. The main island is 682㎢. It may be a small
country but there is a varied range of cultures resulting in small
foreign inspired communities up to huge vibrant business areas. It’s
a unique country!
The Singaporean preliminary
round to select the representatives was held at the largest cosplay
event in the country “Cosfest”.
The regional organizer
for the event is SCC Square and head of staff is the barely 22 year
old Stephanie! (in the picture on the left) She is also herself a
great fan of cosplay. She loves cosplay for what it is and has a strong
desire to let others know how much fun it can be. She started sponsoring
events in earnest from 2002 and is actively raising the standards
on the Singapore cosplay scene. The hard work of Stephanie and the
whole staff of SCC Square paid off with a memorable inaugural preliminary
round to choose the World Cosplay Summit Singapore representative.
Anime and manga has grabbed the hearts of the youth throughout the
world and simply won’t let go. You could see the influence in Singapore
as well!!
July 9th was the opening
day for Cosfest. It was situated in the “Downtown East” amusement
parks very grand looking event hall, “D`marquee”. The dome shaped
site was jam packed with cosplayers and fans alike.
The event was split into
3 competitions. At 2:00 pm began the group contest, followed by the
individual contest and then during the intermission karaoke songs
from anime shows were sung. (The Anime songs were all performed by
amateurs but the level was exceptional! The Japanese language ability
and singing talent were both great.) From all the entrees in the group
contest 5 candidates were selected to move on in the competition towards
becoming the representative group for WCS 2006.
These are the 5 selected candidate groups!
